3D MODELING

3D mesh has been widely used in online gaming, multimedia training materials and virtual reality. Normally, 3D models are represented in triangle mesh format and the size of the mesh data file is large. Therefore, if the 3D objects are stored at a remote server, it takes long time for downloading.

We proposed the following schemes to reduce both the transmission delay and decoded mesh distortion:
1. 3D middleware. It can handle multiple compression formats and selects the reliable/unreliable channel for transmission based on real-time network traffic.
2. Error-concealment. It can tolerate the loss of connectivity information and reconstruct a high quality mesh.
3. Animation streaming. A 3D animation can contain multiple 3D objects and audio streams. Traditionally, the animation cannot start until all the 3D objects are available at the local machine. With progressive streaming, the animation can start upon receiving the base meshes. As animation proceeds and user changes the viewpoint, more refinements can be requested and downloaded.
